Mathias Prenen

Over de kunstenaar

Mathias Prenen (b. 1990) is a Belgian visual artist working primarily with sculpture, installation, and image-driven media. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts and sculpture from KASK – School of Arts in Ghent and continued his studies in lacquer and textile techniques at Kanazawa College of Arts, Japan.

His sculptural practice ranges from large-scale installations to smaller, more intimate objects. Drawing on both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary making, he combines and reworks different sculptural techniques and disciplines. The studio functions as a place of experimentation, where materials, forms, and methods are continuously tested and reconfigured.

This process reflects how cultural meanings shift in a globalized context. Through a strong focus on materiality, process, and the way objects are presented, he questions ideas of authenticity, tradition, and transformation that are occasionally rooted in misinterpretation. His work invites close attention and offers a layered exploration of how historical references and contemporary sensibilities coexist, generating unlikely connections.
