Maxime Olbregts' work focuses primarily on sculpture, light, materiality and spaciality. Almost a year ago, inspired by ancient architecture on a far away trip, he started sculpting alabaster with the idea to add a twist to his sculptures : light. By adding light into the stone, something special happens: the stone somehow comes to life and at the same time the light materializes. The organic shapes sculpted by Maxime add to this effect, making the sculptures appear as if they were some kind of extraterrestrial organisms, or at least their remains. In fact, what he wants to convey comes from unseen worlds, liminal places, parallel dimensions, or places so deep inside that you can no longer see the human anymore.
This ungoing and growing work stems from his few years trying to find his way to make a living in the world of scenography. While working in parrallel as an electrician, he got passionate about light in all its manifestations. He started building wooden lamps and decors with integrated light. Always looking for something new, he found new ways to express the weird things that have come to his mind during his life, which lead to where he is today.
With a master degree in archaeology and a bachelor in art history, he was very inspired by ancient wisdom and mysticism. Other sources of inspiration are clearly science-fiction in its many forms, various kinds of rituals and all the ways human kind has found to transcend this three dimensional perceived reality.
All this has led Maxime to feel the need to synthetise all that he has learned into the practice of interior design, which really encompasses all the skills and experiences he has acquired. In this possible future, atmosphere will be his driving force. Merging light, material, and shape in order to convey unique experiences and bring people to a whole other level of consciousness.
